The Bar Code was founded by former California Bar Exam grader and adjunct law professor, Whitney Roberts. It began in late 2003 as a private tutorial program exclusively for repeat-takers of the California Bar Exam. Today, The Bar Code offers workshops, small classes, private customized tutorials and publications designed for first-time, repeat and out-of-state takers of the California, Arizona, Nevada and New York Bar Exams.
The Bar Code places a high value on relevant experience when selecting bar exam tutors. For that reason, all of the California Bar Exam tutors are former bar exam graders. The majority of them also have teaching experience at top-tier law schools.
Each year, The Bar Code donates five writing program scholarships to students in the Sacramento area unable to pay for bar review services. In 2006, the scholarships were awarded to local students committed to using their law degree for public service. In 2007, the scholarships were donated to the Sacramento, California affiliate of the Wiley Manuel Bar Association, the oldest and largest African American bar association. In 2008, the scholarships will be awarded to the UC Davis School of Law La Raza Law Student Association.
